Leaked documents suggest Eden Hazard cost Chelsea less than we thought

He also got a very tasty Player of the Year bonus.

There’s no denying Chelsea have already got value for money from Eden Hazard.

The Belgian was named PFA and FWA player of the year for the 2014/15 season as he helped the London club to the Premier League title, while he has returned to his world-beating form under Antonio Conte after a blip in the last campaign.

Few can forget the drama around the Belgian joining Chelsea in the first place, in the aftermath of their 2012 Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich.

At the time, it was thought that the Blues had paid French club Lille £32m for Hazard, but new documents from Football Leaks suggest they got an even better deal, paying just £28m for the man who has already scored more than 60 goals in 200-plus games for the club.

Belgian publication Le Soir also reports that Hazard received a bonus of €2.4m for his Player of the Year award (just over £1.8m at the time), while also sharing details of other Belgian internationals’ contracts.

It claims Kevin de Bruyne makes €7.1m (£6m) per year plus bonuses at Manchester City, while Divock Origi makes just shy of €3,000 (more than £2,500) for each Liverpool appearance – including those in which he has entered the field of play as a last-minute substitute.
