Manchester United have asked their supporters if they’d like to see safe-standing areas introduced at Old Trafford if they were made legal.
Terraces were outlawed in England’s top two divisions following the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, with all teams in the Premier League and Championship currently playing in all-seater stadiums.
However, safe standing areas – which we looked at in depth earlier in the year – have been used by several clubs across Europe in recent years, most notably by Celtic and some German teams.
In what some reports have described as a ‘significant step’ towards safe-standing areas being used in the Premier League, United asked fans in their Season Ticket Holder Questionnaire if they’d like to see them at Old Trafford. This is believed to be the first time an English top flight club has asked its fans about the idea of bringing standing areas back to their stadium.

As well as this, United season ticket holders were given a picture of Old Trafford and asked to indicate which part of the ground would be best suited for safe-standing areas.
United representatives visited Celtic Park in October to examine the 2,975 safe-standing area being used by the Scottish champions. The latest development also follows news that Premier League clubs had recently held initial talks about the possibility of bringing safe-standing to the English top flight.
