Whoever runs Liverpool’s Twitter account must have felt helpless promoting their latest competition.
You know when Liverpool started their commercial tie-in with the upcoming historical action film starring Matt Damon, they probably had the obligatory ‘what could possibly go wrong?’ moment.
If this phrase was ever uttered, the subsequent clap of thunder and deluge of rain warning them of their future demise obviously fell on deaf ears as they soldiered on and saw the campaign through.
With just one day left in their #TheGreatReds tournament of champions, they decided to share the leading entry. Their likely intention was to encourage more participation in order to ensure that whoever wins that signed jersey actually earns it.
However, there must have been an air of inevitability that this creation wasn’t going to be received well by fans.
We're enjoying these #TheGreatReds submissions – you have until Friday to get yours in, Reds…

The issue?
Firstly, Liverpool haven’t exactly been enjoying the best run of form of late. They’re only victory so far this year came against League Two outfit Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup – a competition they’ve since been dumped out of by Championship Wolverhampton.
@LFC @ericghoz “the great reds” haven’t won a game in 2017 lads

@LFC Remove this tweet. Andy Carroll has more goals in his last 4 games than this entire “Great Wall” in 5 games. Wake up!

@LFC the fucking state of that. Absolutely fucking embarrassing

Also, there’s the small problem of that David Luiz free kick in their recent Premier League draw at Anfield. That set-piece beat everyone including the supposedly “great wall”.
Unsurprisingly, fans were quick to hone in on this flaw with the competition.

@LFC @ericghoz If only the great wall existed for that David Luiz Free Kick
