“I think he’ll do well at United for a long, long time”
Ryan Giggs has backed Marcus Rashford to be a long-term success at Manchester United.
The former United winger and assistant manager also spoke how Rashford earned a call-up to the first-team last season, and had his say on what he thinks is the 19-year-old’s best position.
“He is an exciting prospect,” Giggs told PA Sport, before saying he thinks Rashford’s best position is as at centre-forward.
“He’s just so quick and direct. His best position, really, is through the middle, coming up with the goods and he is just an exciting player.
“I always say he is a Man United player because he is exciting, he has got a good mentality and he is tough. I think he’ll do well at United for a long, long time.”
Rashford has played predominately on the wings this season, due to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s impressive form.
The Swedish striker has, so far, scored 24 goals in his debut season at Old Trafford, and shows no signs of decline despite being 35-years-old.
However, even when Zlatan was on a barren run earlier in the season, Jose Mourinho didn’t use Rashford as a centre-forward.
The England striker has featured centrally in just three games in the current campaign.
It could be the same next season, if Ibrahimovic remains at the club and continues to score so many goals. But Rashford is definitely a player who can make a long-term impact at the club.
Giggs also spoke about Rashford’s impressive performance in reserve-team training last February, that helped earn him a call-up to the first-team.
The striker impressed in training a few days before he made his debut against FCÂ Midtjylland in the Europa League, when he scored two goals.
Giggs, who was assistant manager at the time, knew that Rashford had something special.
“I remember watching him the week before [his debut], it may have even been three or four days before that game, training with the reserves,” Giggs said.
“He obviously stood out and he looked sharp but, little did we know that three or four days later, he would be starring and ending the season so well and then going onto the Euros with England.”
