The truth behind that video of a pissed-off John Arne Riise storming out of an interview

Poorly executed...

Simon Lloyd

By now, there’s a good chance you’ve seen that footage of a seemingly clueless presenter interviewing a pissed-off John Arne Riise.

A short clip taken from the interview was widely circulated on Monday morning (largely by Manchester United fans).

In it, we see Riise asked about how it felt to lift the Premier League trophy and if he’d intentionally scored the own goal that contributed to Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final exit to Chelsea in 2008. Here, have a watch…

Naturally, given that April Fools’ Day was only a couple of days ago, there were a fair few people that suspected this wasn’t all that it seemed.

The full interview, which sees the former Liverpool star asked several more ridiculous questions before eventually storming out, makes it clear enough that this wasn’t the work of a misinformed interviewer at all…

In fact, it’s since turned out that this was supposed to be a prank. A tweet from Riise himself confirmed as much, claiming that the woman asking the questions – Malaysian television presenter Amanda Chaang – had intended to prank him, only for the producers and Riise himself to turn the joke on her and stage a walk out.

In response to Riise’s tweet, Stadium Astro, the company that appear to have been behind the video, reminded Riise that the full version of the video hadn’t yet been released…

Prompting this from Riise…

All in all, probably not the best executed prank of all time…
