Yet again, it wasn’t the best of performances from Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.
With second-from-bottom Swansea standing between them and a place in the top four (albeit for perhaps just a day), United once again fluffed their lines. Having taken the lead from a Wayne Rooney penalty in first half stoppage time, the United skipper conceded a cheap free-kick on the edge of his own box which allowed Gylfi Sigurdsson to fire home an equaliser with ten minutes left to play. United couldn’t find a second, and the game ended as a draw – their tenth at Old Trafford this season.
But hey, at least United fans could console themselves by poking fun at relegated Sunderland.
A day before United surrendered another couple of points at home, David Moyes’ side succumbed to the inevitable – their 1-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth enough to confirm that they will be playing Championship football next season.
For United fans, this was a day that they’ve looked forward to for a whole five years. Why? Well, you might recall what happened on the final day of the 2011/12 season. United had secured a 1-0 victory at the Stadium of Light and, when the full-time whistle blew, their neighbours City were losing 2-1 at home to Queens Park Rangers. City had to win the game to secure the title and, as we’re sure you’ll probably be aware, managed to do exactly that thanks to stoppage time goals from Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero.
As news of the dramatic events at the Etihad reached the Sunderland supporters, they chose to mock the United players and fans by adopting the Poznan celebration which, at the time, was popular with City’s fans.
It left a sour taste in United mouths, and prompted Sir Alex Ferguson to vow that United and their supporters “would not forget”.
So, as Sunderland’s relegation was confirmed, plenty of United fans remembered that day in 2012 and took to Twitter…
