A curious clause exists in the contracts for ‘Canelo’ Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin

'Canelo' definitely comes off best

This September will see the most anticipated fight since Mayweather vs. Pacquiao finally came to fruition.

Unlike MayPac, which took place when Floyd Mayweather was 38 years old and Pacquiao was 36, Gennady Golovkin’s upcoming clash with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez will take place with both fighters smack dab in the middle of their prime.

Immediately following Alvarez’s humbling domination of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on Saturday night, fight fans’ wishes were granted with the announcement that the fight was on.

Golovkin will defend his WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, and IBO middleweight titles against ‘Canelo’ on September 16 and the undefeated Kazakh seemingly has a hell of a lot more to lose.

Despite the fact that ‘Canelo’ is the challenger, he is the one with a rematch clause in his contract, according to a report in the LA Times this week.

That means that if Golovkin remains unbeaten and condemns ‘Canelo’ to just the second defeat in the Mexican’s career, it will be ‘Canelo’ who can make the call for another meeting of the two most exciting middleweights in the world.

But, in rather unusual circumstances, Golovkin has no such stipulation in his contract and if he is dethroned by his upcoming opponent, GGG will simply have to return to the drawing board as ‘Canelo’ will be under no obligation to offer his rival a rematch.

Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez revealed the intricacies of the contracts which prove that ‘Canelo’ is indeed the so-called “A side” in this match-up.

A venue has yet to be named for the clash although it’s believed that the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, London’s Wembley Stadium, the Staples Centre in L.A., Madison Square Garden and the AT&T Stadium in Dallas are all in the running to host the monster showdown.

Golovkin will be considered favourite for the fight and he was in attendance on Saturday night to confront the victorious but unfazed ‘Canelo’.

“Golovkin, you are next, my friend,” Canelo said after strolling through Chavez Jr.

We simply can’t wait for this one!
