The full squads for Michael Carrick’s testimonial game were announced earlier this week and supporters were thrilled to learn that there was very little in the way of filler in the ranks.
We learned that, taking on a Manchester United XI of players from the 2008 season, would be an All-Star team featuring some of the greatest talents the Premier League had ever seen.

Particularly exciting was the prospect of seeing both Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard line out opposite Paul Scholes.
Three of the greatest English midfielders of all time on the same pitch? Brilliant.
Well Carrick has some bad news ahead of kick-off.
With less than two hours to go until the game gets underway, Carrick revealed that both Gerrard and Lampard had picked up injuries and will be unable to have a kickabout.

And while it might take away from the spectacle ever so slightly, hardcore United supporters couldn’t muster up much sympathy for two legends who made their careers at the Red Devils’ rivals, Liverpool and Chelsea.
