The one and only Tony Danza is returning to a TV screen near you.
Younger readers might not have a clue who Tony Danza is – and they’re all the worse for it – but the name will instantly ring a bell with anyone over 30 who’s spent a decent portion of their lives watching TV.
The star of classic shows such as Taxi and Who’s the Boss and a host of movies, including one with arguably the greatest title of all time – The Garbage Picking Field Goal Kicking Philadelphia Phenomenon – Danza became a star in the late 1970s and early 1980s and his popularity has endured since.
More recently, he’s received critical acclaim for his roles in the Broadway musical comedy Honeymoon in Vegas and as Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s father in the indie hit Don Jon.
Barring some minor cameos here and there, Danza has been fairly quiet as far as TV is concerned in the last few years, but he’s about to make a comeback in a new 10-episode, one-hour drama/comedy series on Netflix called The Good Cop.
In The Good Cop, Danza plays Tony Sr., a disgraced, former NYPD officer who never followed the rules. He lives with his son, Tony Jr., an earnest, obsessively honest NYPD detective who makes a point of always following the rules.
This ‘odd couple’ become unofficial partners as Tony Sr. offers his overly-cautious son blunt, streetwise advice on everything from handling suspects to handling women.
Danza will also serve as a producer of the series, with Andy Breckman (the creator of Monk), Randy Zisk (Bones, Monk), and Howard Klein (The Office, The Mindy Project) also involved in what is an original Netflix production.
When the series will be available on Netflix is as yet unclear, but it certainly sounds like one to watch.
