The exchange was painfully awkward

Piers Morgan was involved in an awkward exchange with boxing legend Tyson Fury after technical difficulties meant Fury couldn’t hear Morgan’s praise.

The two were speaking as part of the controversial broadcaster’s new TV programme on brand new channel Talk TV in which he spoke to the ‘Gypsy King’ following his knockout win against Dillian Whyte to defend his WBC heavyweight title.

However when going on to praise the 32-year-old, labelling him as one of the greatest boxers of all time, Morgan was left red-faced after Fury didn’t hear the nice comments.

Morgan said: “I’ve interviewed you many times and I think you’ve had one of the all-time great careers as a boxer.

“If this really is the end, I just want to thank you on behalf of all the fans around the world and all the sports lovers for everything you’ve done because you’ve made us all proud.

“Particularly in this country, you’ve made us proud to be British and you’re just a great champion. So, thank you very much for everything that you’ve done.”

But despite the kind words, Morgan was then met with brief silence before Fury was then heard saying: “He’s gone,” to which a distraught Morgan replied: “Oh he’s gone, he didn’t hear my compliment!”

‘This is nothing but the truth, I’m done’

The awkward encounter followed after Fury insisted that he is definitely retiring from the sport. The ‘Gypsy King’ made the revelation in the aftermath of his win against Whyte at Wembley Stadium.

His decision has been met with some backlash from fans, who believe he should take on a unification fight between the winner of the Anthony Joshua – Oleksandr Usyk rematch, however Fury said that he has ‘had enough.’

“This is nothing but the truth, I’m done,” he said.

“Every dog has its day. When is enough, enough? I’m happy and healthy, I’ve still got my brains and can still talk. I’ve got a beautiful wife and six kids. Success, fame, glory? What else am I doing it for?

“Boxing is a very dangerous sport you can be taken out with one punch as we saw on Saturday night. It only takes one unlucky blow and you may not get up. I’m quitting whilst I’m ahead, only the second man in history to retire as undefeated heavyweight champion.”
