Germany beat England on penalties and there is very little in the way of surprise.
Tuesday night’s European U21 Championship semi-final went exactly according to the script, with Stuart Pearce watching on as pundit.
Pearce famously left the pitch in floods of tears in the semi-final of the 1990 World Cup, when the left-back missed a penalty in the shootout that followed a 1-1 draw with West Germany.
“I wish I could say I don’t know what it feels like!” Pearce said after Tuesday’s game. “The one thing I can say, all the players will benefit from this experience, being at that tournament.”
On Tuesday, Nathan Redmond missed the crucial penalty, ensuring that Germany would progress to the final, with Tammy Abraham missing earlier in the shootout.
The outcome of the game, which took place at the Stadion Miejski Tychy, inspired the same joke on social media, with supporters all too familiar with the sour taste of being bested from 12 yards against Germany in a semi-final, having experienced a similar fate in the Euro 1996 semi.
England lost on penalties in the semi-final to Germany because of course they did. All is normal in the universe. #ENGGER
