Annabelle: Creation is earning some very impressive and terrifying reviews

Paul Moore

100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Horror fans have another date with the deadly doll.

Given that shared cinematic universes are all the rage right now, there’s one unexpected saga that horror audiences can’t seem to get enough of and you can blame James Wan for ruining your dreams.

As outlined before, The Conjuring and its sequel are excellent horror films that combined old school scares with cutting-edge technology. It also helped that the films were perfectly cast and had some incredibly talented people that were working behind the lens.

Horror is a genre that’s difficult to master, but it’s clear that New Line have a good eye for talent as seen by the fact that the public really want to be scared s**tless in the cinema.

With The Nun and The Crooked Man being released in the near future, you would be forgiven for thinking that the studio have turned a blind (and demonic) eye away from one of the most memorable supernatural entities that Ed and Lorraine Warren have encountered, the demonic doll Annabelle.

Granted, the 2014 original didn’t quite match the high standards that The Conjuring set, but its sequel, Annabelle: Creation has already been earning some very impressive reviews.

Ok, what’s it about?

A couple still grieving the death of their daughter take in children from a local orphanage, but the family are soon terrorized by a demented doll known as Annabelle.

At the time of writing, David F. Sandberg’s film currently has an 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with The Hollywood Reporter praising its “deft affinity for the elaboration of horror conventions, as well as the expansion of the Conjuring universe.”

IGN remarked that “Annabelle: Creation is the rare horror sequel that improves upon the original, featuring more engaging protagonists and a far less problematic ending.” This improvement from the original is also acknowledged by Collider in their review which states that “he (Sandberg) manages to successfully do his own thing while still respecting a past installment – and considering how I felt about the past installment, that’s extremely impressive.”

The film is released in cinemas on August 11th and horror fans will have a new reason to feel terrified.
