La Liga’s top brass have ruled out granting an extension to Real Madrid to complete a protracted move for David De Gea.
The Manchester United keeper saw his switch to the Santiago Bernabeu stall late on Monday despite the two clubs finally agreeing a transfer fee.
With Real failing to complete De Gea’s registration in time, it was thought they would be handed an extension to get everything over the line.
However, the LFP – Spain’s equivalent of the Premier League organisation – have refused to reopen their registration, meaning that De Gea would be ineligible for La Liga matches even if FIFA approve the transfer.
“The period [for registrations] finished last night,” LFP sources told El País. “The rules are for everyone and you must adhere to them.
“FIFA doesn’t have the authority to order the registration of a footballer.”
There’s still a chance that De Gea could sign, but will only appear in cup competitions until January.
