God bless Juan Mata, one of the nicest guys in football.
Earlier this month, the Manchester United favourite launched a new initiative called Common Goal, aimed at helping underprivileged young people around the world. The plan is to unite wealthy footballing superstars behind a shared commitment to give back to those most in need.
Essentially, the plan is for players to pledge a minimum of 1% of their wages to a collective fund, which will be allocated to football charities that create the greatest impact worldwide.
Mata was the first to commit to the fund, but was eager for his fellow pros to join him in the charitable venture. Thusly he delighted to announce on Thursday that none other than Germany international Mats Hummels had got in touch to join the movement and donate a portion of his Bayern Munich wage to Common Goal.

“As soon as I heard of ‘Common Goal’ I knew this was a chance for football to improve our world, and I wanted to be part of it,” Hummels said. A delighted Mata described the defender as the “perfect team-mate”, going on to explain:
“He really gets what we’re trying to achieve and is the perfect team-mate to have on-board at this early stage. The fact that a World Cup holder – at the peak of his career with one of the biggest clubs on the planet – has chosen to make the pledge shows the power and magic of what we’re doing. The reception to ‘Common Goal’ has been amazing so far and I have no doubt Mats’ involvement will inspire more players to join.”
Amazing news we’re sure you’ll agree. But some Manchester United fans got their wires thoroughly crossed and assumed that Mata’s ‘Welcome to the team @matshummels’ tweet was an announcement that the 28-year-old was joining him at Old Trafford…
