Chelsea appear set for a frantic end to the summer transfer window.
With reports circulating that Antonio Conte is looking to bolster his attacking options with a move for Swansea’s Fernando Llorente, the Daily Mail have also claimed that Leicester’s Jamie Vardy is also being considered by the Premier League champions.
The same report also states that Chelsea are close to agreeing a deal with one of Vardy’s Leicester teammates: midfielder, Danny Drinkwater.
Conte’s desire to bring in a new midfielder is hardly a surprise. Only weeks ago, he made it clear that the decision to allow Nemanja Matic move to Manchester United came from the Chelsea board, not him.
The Mail claim that the transfer of Drinkwater, who came through the youth ranks at United, is still being discussed by both clubs but that a £40m agreement for the 27-year-old is ‘close’.
If the deal is completed, Drinkwater will join forces with N’Golo Kante at Stamford Bridge. The pair’s performances in Leicester’s midfield during the 2015/16 season were a significant factor in the Foxes’ incredible Premier League triumph.
Chelsea, who atoned for their shock opening day defeat to Burnley by beating Tottenham at Wembley last weekend, will host Everton in the early kick-off on Sunday afternoon.
