If you’re after a pint, a decent meal and want to get some change back from a tenner, there’s only one place to head.
Wetherspoons is one of Britain’s great levellers. It caters to everyone: broke students on a night out, families looking for a Sunday roast, lads getting the beers in before the football, older folks popping in for fish and chips – come one, come all.
“If in doubt, head to Spoons,” is a personal mantra of mine. There’s a decent selection of beers, you know exactly what to expect, and above all, it won’t break the bank.
But on September 20, things are going to be even cheaper – 7.5% cheaper, in fact.
It’s all part of a stunt for Tax Equality Day, designed to show the benefit to customers of reducing VAT on the hospitality industry from 20% down to 5%. As a result, on September 20, Wetherspoons customers will find themselves saving money – for example, an order that would ordinarily have cost £10 will only cost £9.25.
Wetherspoons boss Tim Martin said: “Pubs suffer a huge disadvantage, paying about 16 pence in business rates per pint versus about two pence for supermarkets.
“In addition there is a huge VAT inequality and unfairness. A reduction in the level of VAT on a long-term basis will create a level playing field and generate growth and jobs in an important and vital industry- especially in beleaguered high streets.
“We’re aiming to make it the busiest day of the entire year in our pubs and would urge other pub and restaurant operators to participate too.”
So if you want to get a few cheap/even cheaper pints in, get down to Spoons on September 20.
