When tributes to injured teammates go wrong, starring Lorenzo Insigne

Not his fault, mind

The intention was great. The execution… less so.

Napoli star Arkadiusz Milik faces a heartbreaking four months on the sidelines after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during his side’s s 3-2 win over SPAL last weekend.

Sadly, Milik had sustained an identical injury last year and he is understandably receiving plenty of support from his teammates and supporters given his poor luck with injuries since moving to Serie A.

On Tuesday, Milik’s close friend Lorenzo Insigne felt it appropriate to pay tribute to his stricken teammate but, unfortunately, it didn’t go exactly to plan.

Insigne had clearly pre-arranged a celebration with the Napoli bench on the off chance that he found the net in the Champions League clash at home to Feyenoord on Tuesday evening.

Insigne opened the scoring after just seven minutes and he made a beeline for the dugout, where he’d hoped to be thrown a shirt with ‘Milik’ on the back.

There must have been some mix-up, however, because he was handed a jersey with a different Polish international’s name instead… that of Piotr ZieliÅ„ski.

The look on his face was priceless when Insigne realised that he was paying tribute to the wrong teammate entirely and the issue was quickly resolved.

Still, hard not to feel like the balls-up took away from the gesture ever so slightly.
