Golfing legend Rory McIlroy is a big Manchester United fan, and like most United fans these days he’s not exactly brimming with positivity.

Since the glory days of Sir Alex Ferguson, they haven’t had much to shout about. Louis van Gaal has tried to transform United with big money signings and a new brand of football, but McIlroy isn’t convinced.

He told Sky Sports “I’m not convinced LVG is the right man to lead us.”

during the Manchester United training session / press conference held at Jan Breydel Stadium on August 25, 2015 in Brugge, Belgium.

An exasperated sigh about United’s new signings maybe betrayed his frustrations further, although he did say he believed Martial, Depay and Co. would come good in time.

Ever the optimist, McIlroy thinks rivals Manchester City will run away with the league again this season.

“At least we’re back in Europe,” he added. “Rooney did well at the weekend so hopefully that will give him some confidence for the domestic season as well.

“Hopefully things will look up. A top four finish is obviously likely and hopefully we’ll challenge for the title, but we’ll see.”
