Tom Petty has died at the age of 66

Petty's manager has released a short statement on behalf of the musician's family

Best known as the frontman of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Tom Petty has passed away at the age of 66. The news was confirmed by CBS.

The musician suffered a full cardiac arrest and was found unconscious and not breathing in his Malibu home on Sunday night before being taken to UCLA Santa Monica Hospital and put on life support.

Famous songs such as Free Falling, I Won’t Back Down and American Girl, saw Petty’s band inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

His band have been on the road since 1976 and continued to perform. Their final show was last Monday, where they played three sold-out shows at the Hollywood Bowl to conclude their 40th-anniversary tour.
