England secured their spot at next summer’s World Cup on Thursday night.
Harry Kane’s stoppage time goal against Slovenia was enough to ensure that the Gareth Southgate’s men would not be overtaken at the top of Group F.
As those who watched the game – both at Wembley and on television – will testify, the performance from the Three Lions was far from convincing. In the first half especially, the tempo was slow and the home side failed to create much in the way of chances.
This did improve after the break but all in all, this wasn’t the kind of display that had anyone believing England stood a realistic chance of getting near to winning the tournament in Russia next summer.
Prior to the goal, it seemed most England fans were more interested in throwing paper aeroplanes onto to the Wembley turf, with one especially earning a particularly loud cheer. Although not picked up by television cameras, footage doing the rounds on Twitter after the game explains why…
Seemingly thrown from the upper tiers (which seem empty), the plane drifts its way into Joe Hart’s goal – prompting celebrations from those watching. Have a watch below. We’re full of admiration for the guy who calls it a good eight seconds before it crosses the line…
You know England are shite when a plane landing in the net gets the biggest cheer 😂 #England #ENGSLO pic.twitter.com/cZxIfDEeaw
