Just imagine.
It is common knowledge that Emre Can is slowly eating into the final year of his current deal at Liverpool. Since signing from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2014, the 23-year-old German has established himself as an important member of the squad at Anfield, with his impressive technique, power and versatility.
Thus far, contract negotiations have stalled, despite the player making clear that he is enjoying life on Merseyside. The sticking point appears to be Can’s reported insistence on the club including a release clause in his new contract, as well as a hefty wage rise to put him alongside Coutinho as one of the top-earners.
Liverpool aren’t keen on any such clause, presumably because they don’t want another club bagging a bargain deal like they did when they paid Can’s £9.75m clause at Leverkusen. If no new contract can be agreed, the likes of Juventus and Inter Milan are reportedly waiting in the wings, but the most recent reports are a little more alarming.
According to Corriere dello Sport, none other than fierce rivals Manchester United are interested in snapping up the player for free next summer, with Jose Mourinho identifying the player as the perfect replacement for Michael Carrick, as well as useful cover in defensive positions. As you can imagine, the reports have caused a stir amongst Liverpool fans.
Whether the story is genuine remains to be seen, but the midfielder/defender would become public enemy number one if he ever donned the red of Manchester…
