Igor Akinfeev *finally* keeps a Champions League clean sheet

Finally!

JOE

History is made.

Igor Akinfeev has only gone and bloody well done it.

For eleven years – eleven long years – and 43 games, the Russian goalkeeper had failed to keep a clean sheet in the Champions League, the longest run by any goalkeeper in the history of the competition.

Today though, that run ended.

With his CSKA Moscow side hosting Benfica in their penultimate Group A fixture, the 31-year-old finally ended his miserable run, helping his side secure a 2-0 victory over the Portuguese champions.

The victory was enough to keep alive the Russian club’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the competition, while Benfica are yet to pick up a single point from five matches.
