An unlikely hero steps up to volunteer for Manchester United striker duty…

Tom Victor

You know that nightmare where you’re about to enter an exam for a subject you know nothing about? Horrible, isn’t it.

Well, on a similar note, Ashley Young has told Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal that he is available to play up front if needed.

United are without Wayne Rooney for the Champions League opener against PSV Eindhoven and, while new signing Anthony Martial seems more likely to get the nod, Young has put himself forward for Van Gaal to put him as a forward.

The Guardian quotes former Aston Villa man Young as saying: “I can play in lots of positions and I have done that under the manager, whether it is up front or in midfield. Hopefully I can play there [through the middle] but it’s up to the manager.”

If he can keep £59m Angel Di Maria away from a starting berth on the wing, why can’t he do the same for £36m striker Martial?
