Manchester City can seal the title against Manchester United

But it'll probably be over much, much sooner...

Simon Lloyd

Having stretched their lead at the top of the Premier League to 15 points at Newcastle on Wednesday, it’s inevitable that Manchester City will be crowned champions in the months ahead.

Raheem Sterling’s goal at St James’ Park was enough to clinch the points for Pep Guardiola’s side, who claimed their 18th consecutive Premier League win in the process. Perhaps unsurprisingly, some City fans are already trying to calculate how soon their side will seal the league title and – as the tweet below shows – if it’s possible for them to win it when they host Manchester United in April.

As things stand, United have picked up 43 points from their 20 Premier League games to date. Assuming they were to win their remaining 18 matches (unlikely, we know), they’d finish with a total of 97 points.

City need just 13 more wins to reach 97 points. Provided there’s no rescheduled games, the final match of City’s next 13 Premier League fixtures is indeed the Manchester derby at The Etihad on April 7. If both teams have won all their league games from now until then, City would be crowned champions if they avoid defeat in that game.

If form is anything to go by, however, the chances are City will have the title sewn up much, much sooner.

Guard of honour, Jose?
