Ryan Giggs could be set for a sensational reunion with Paul Scholes.
Havin been unveiled as new Wales manager on Monday, focus has now shifted to who Giggs will bring in to assist him as the national team looks to rebound after missing out on the World Cup.
His predecessor Chris Coleman walked away from the position in November in order to take over at Championship strugglers Sunderland, a move he’s possibly regretting now, and it certainly won’t be an easy transition into management for Giggs, who scored 12 goals in 64 appearances for Wales between 1991 and 2007.
“It will be a balance of Welsh and potentially non-Welsh as well,” Giggs said of the backroom team he hopes to assemble. “I am not giving names, but they have to be right for the job.
“They have to be someone who is going to contribute to the success of the Welsh national team. That is my main focus.
“You have to have the right dynamic around the team. You don’t want to be managing your coaching staff, you have enough on managing your team. You have to have trust, but someone who will bring a lot to the team.
“It’s something I need to think about sooner rather than later. But I do have a few ideas and, whoever it will be, like me they will give their all for it. Experience would be good, but it has to be the right man for the job.”
According to reports, Giggs will consider bringing ex-teammate Paul Scholes on board as his assistant.
Former Wales and Manchester United winger Mickey Thomas, who is well-connected with the national team set-up as well as at Old Trafford, has revealed that Scholes is in the frame to join forces with his Class of ’92 comrade.
“Ryan has to decide who he want to help him, but Paul Scholes has been mentioned,” Thomas said.
“Current number two Osian Roberts has been a massive part of the Welsh success for the last 10 years and I would think he would be involved as well.”
Scholes helped Giggs out when he took interim charge of United after David Moyes was sacked in April 2014.
