Jose Mourinho hasn’t always been convinced of the left-back’s ability
Last week, Jose Mourinho surprised a few people when he claimed that there were few left-backs in the modern game better than Luke Shaw.
Considering he is a player Mourinho has criticised openly in the past, it came as quite a surprise. However, Shaw’s recent reintegration into the United first-team would suggest that the two have overcome whatever differences they may have had.
While the former Southampton man’s long-term future at Old Trafford remains somewhat uncertain, he has impressed after coming in from the cold and covering for Ashley Young following his suspension.
And, in a new interview with Stadium Astro, Shaw has opened up about his relationship with Mourinho and how he was determined to prove the Portuguese coach wrong.
“There have been a lot of things said about me but I’ve just kept my head down and worked hard. For me, it was all about proving the manager wrong, it wasn’t about anyone else or what people were saying outside of the club. I just ignored it and worked hard to keep motivating myself because I want to stay at this club – it’s the biggest club in the world. I want to be here, playing every week so to turn it around and get that sort of confidence from the manager was really pleasing. It pushes me on even more now.”
Shaw continued to praise Mourinho when asked about the manager’s time and impact at the club ahead of his 100th game in charge, against Yeovil Town on Friday night.
“He’s been amazing. We all knew he was one of the most successful managers in the world, so it was pleasing for everyone to come here and work with him. It was good for me, too, with the tactics, training and the way he communicates. He definitely is one of the best in the world and it’s a pleasure to work under him but it’s enjoyable at the same time as being serious so long may it continue.”
