The loan army continues to grow.

Chelsea currently have 32 players out on loan. Their policy of recruiting young talented players before farming them out to Championship clubs and teams around Europe is well known. It’s also come under a lot of scrutiny, with its critics claiming it does not have the players’ interests at heart.

Alas, another Chelsea youngster is set to rejoin the loan army. According to the Daily Mail, Charly Musonda will join Celtic for 18 months in order to get game time.

After fighting off competition from Spanish club Leganés for the winger’s signature, the Scottish champions are set to sign Musonda in the coming days.

The Belgian will still have competition for a a place in the team up at Celtic Park, with Scott Sinclair, Patrick Roberts and James Forrest all impressing under Brendan Rodgers. Celtic will of course have cup matches and Europa League ties to play, which will allow for rotation.

Musonda is not exactly bulky, so sending him to Scotland for a loan spell could be a way of trying to toughen him up and prepare him for the physicality of the Premier League. In that respect, Celtic is the perfect loan destination for young talent; Brendan Rodgers has them playing good, possession based football, but the conditions and physicality of the league can be character building for young players.

Manchester City made a decision to loan Patrick Roberts to Celtic with the same thing in mind and he’s thriving.
