Anthony Martial shares his Man United record with some unlikely names

Tom Victor

There aren’t too many players who score in each of their first two Premier League games for Manchester United.

Wayne Rooney scored a hat-trick on his debut against Fenerbahce but had to wait another month for his first league goal as he helped end Arsenal’s long unbeaten run.

Ruud van Nistelrooy netted twice in his first top-flight outing but drew a blank next time out against Blackburn, while neither Andy Cole nor Dwight Yorke could manage debut goals.

We’ll let you guess who joins Martial on the illustrious list, but we’ll warn you now that it’s not easy.

Teddy Sheringham? Ole Gunnar Solskjaer? Cristiano Ronaldo? Nope, not even close.

Martial will hope his Old Trafford career goes slightly differently to his fellow fast starters.

Saha, who incidentally scored for Fulham on Van Nistelrooy’s United debut, saw his time at the club hit by a series of injuries.

Macheda, meanwhile, will always have a place in the history books for helping Sir Alex Ferguson’s team clinch the 2008/09 title, but he failed to make the cut after that and is now playing for Cardiff City in the Championship.

Still, a blend of Saha’s titles and Macheda’s hero status might not be the worst thing for Martial to pick up, and he already has one of the two fighting his corner.
