The fallout from Manchester City’s shock FA Cup exit to Wigan Athletic on Monday evening continues…
Having watched their side pull off a shock 1-0 victory against the runaway Premier League leaders, many Wigan supporters invaded the DW Stadium’s pitch at the full-time whistle. The FA are now studying footage of the events which followed the game, including an altercation between Sergio Aguero and a Wigan fan.
The Argentine striker appeared to lash out at the fan as he attempted to make his way off the field of play. Footage of the incident was briefly shown by the BBC, with Alan Shearer – on pundit duty at the time – suggesting Aguero might have been provoked.
Now, City are said to be contemplating pressing charges after consulting Aguero discussed the matter with the club’s legal representatives. The striker has reportedly told the club that the supporter had shouted “suck my d***!” at him, before spitting down his ear. This amounts to common assault and may see the club take action.
While the majority of those Wigan fans that entered the field were merely celebrating their side’s historic victory, a sizeable number appeared to make a beeline for the North Stand, from where City’s 4,000 supporters had watched the game. Some of these Latics fans were filmed taunting the away supporters, which led to missiles being thrown at them from the stand.
