Scott McTominay is at the centre of a tug-of-war between Gareth Southgate and Alex McLeish.
Not literally, we should point out, although that would be an interesting way of settling the matter of who the Manchester United midfielder plays his international football for.
The 21-year-old has impressed after recently being given the nod by Jose Mourinho to start important games against Sevilla and Chelsea, so much so it’s caught the attention of both England and Scotland managers.
Born in Lancaster with a Glaswegian father, McTominay is eligible to play for either country. Although it was reported in recent weeks that he would opt to play for Scotland, recent developments suggest the midfielder is yet to make up his mind.
McLeish is understood to have held talks with McTominay on Thursday in a bid to persuade him to pledge his international future to Scotland. However, the BBC’s Simon Stone has followed this with a report which claims Gareth Southgate will visit United’s training ground on Friday to hold discussions about him playing for England.

McTominay is yet to represent either country at any level. It is believed McLeish wants to call him up to Scotland’s senior squad for games against Costa Rica and Hungary later this month.
It is unclear whether Southgate intends to ask McTominay to be part of the English senior side, with Under 21s boss Aidy Boothroyd thought to be considering selecting him for his team.
