One aspect of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s penalty baffled Frank Lampard

He knows a thing or two about spot kicks

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had a gilt-edged chance to make a game of it.

Arsenal came out after the half-time break with a semblance of purpose, having presumably been read the riot act following a dismal first 45 minutes in which they yet again conceded three unanswered goals to Manchester City.

Manager Arsene Wenger likely told his players to win the second half at the very least and they were given the perfect chance to set up a comeback when the Gunners were awarded a penalty in the 53rd minute.

Aubameyang confidently clutched the ball and stepped up.

The Gabon international attempted to curl the ball into the corner but it was well inside the post and City goalkeeper Ederson got a strong hand to the shot, parrying it away to safety.

The penalty miss summed up Arsenal’s evening as nothing went right for the hosts and Chelsea legend Frank Lampard, who knows a thing or two about spot kicks, was perplexed by Aubameyang’s run-up.

Aubameyang approached the ball straight-on but was forced to check his run to his left before making contact and Lampard, who scored 43 penalties in the Premier League, had no idea why Arsenal’s record signing decided to add another element to the penalty.

“You see what I don’t understand, he started very straight and then he makes this run out to come on the angle,” Lampard said.

“I don’t understand why complicate the run-up. You’re giving yourself a problem.

“I used to take penalties with a straight run-up. If you take a straight run-up – take a straight run-up!

“I don’t understand the bend. All of a sudden you’re giving yourself something to think about, then the mind-games start. I do like it – and it might be old fashioned – make your mind up and your run-up stays as it is.”
