Celtic have something momentous planned for their match against Hearts.
The Scottish champions are set to once again incorporate an emblem on to their famous jerseys to remember The Irish Famine, or the Great Hunger as it is known in many parts of the world including Scotland.
The club’s jerseys will bear the emblem of the National Famine Memorial Day for the clash with the Edinburgh side.
Celtic have worn the symbol on their jerseys for a number of years, and according to the club’s Chief Executive Peter Lawwell, remembering The Great Famine is important to the club,
“The origins of Celtic Football Club are inextricably linked to the Great Famine and it is right that we once again join in this commemoration,” Lawwell says.
“Celtic was formed by immigrants and to help people in real need, many whose families had escaped the devastation of the Great Famine.”
“We should never forget the devastating impact this event had on the lives of so many millions of people and we are pleased again to play our part in this year’s memorial.”
