Liverpool bus arrives at Etihad to ‘low key’ reception

The Liverpool team bus arrived at the Etihad Stadium to a low key reception ahead of the Reds Champions League quarter-final return leg with Manchester City on Tuesday.

The Manchester City team bus was subjected to bottles, cans and smoke bombs last Wednesday as Liverpool romped their way to a 3-0 first leg win at Anfield

The reception for the Liverpool team bus was muted in comparison to what Pep Guardiola and his side experienced the previous week as security and police presence increased for Wednesday’s second leg in Manchester.

Extra stewards and police patrols were deployed for the Liverpool team bus in a bid to avoid similar scenes before last week’s first leg. The Liverpool squad arrived at the Etihad via police escort and were reportedly taken through to an underground car park.

Guardiola asked where the police presence was for last week’s game at Anfield and accurately predicted a greater security presence for Tuesday’s return leg.

“Since I am here it has never happened once,” said Guardiola after last week’s trip. I think you are not going to ask me [after the game] like you asked me in Liverpool. We knew what was going to happen. Where were the police? On Tuesday the police know exactly what they have to do. For our fans it is just a football game. Come to the game and support us during the game.”

Liverpool condemned and apologised for last week’s incident and have warned fans of the severe consequences if they were caught with flares, smoke bombs or fireworks inside the stadium.
