The news that Wayne Rooney will be the subject of a new BBC documentary has generated plenty of headlines since its announcement.
One of the more intriguing lines comes from Ian Ladyman’s article in the Daily Mail, which remarks on Rooney’s trial with Liverpool as a youngster.
Of course, Rooney went on to make his professional debut with Everton – the club he supported as a child, before making a move to Manchester United in 2004.
Ladyman mentions how he attended the Liverpool trial dressed in full Everton kit – something that probably didn’t go down too well. That said, it’s unlikely this would have deterred the Anfield club from wanting to sign up the young Rooney.
Given the role that Rooney has played in Manchester United’s successes over the last decade, it’s interesting to think how differently the footballing landscape might look if he’d chosen to begin his career with the North-West’s other reds.
