The performance is as stunning today as it was back then.
Jurgen Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund had many incredible moments throughout his seven-year tenure at the club, from winning the Bundesliga at a canter over rivals Bayern Munich, to becoming a fixture in the Champions League latter stages.
Arguably the best moment though came on this day five years ago, as the now-Liverpool manager’s team took on Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final.
The day was April 24, 2013 and Dortmund had previously scraped past La Liga side Malaga by the skin of their teeth in the quarter-final.
They came into the game as a team viewed somewhere between underdogs and dark horses, capable of destroying the best teams but perhaps unlikely to do it this time.
Destroy they did though, as Robert Lewandowski, Marco Reus, Mario Gotze and Ilkay Gundogan dismantled Jose Mourinho’s team with a level ruthless efficiency which – it could be argued – has not been seen at this level since.
Don’t believe it? Just sit back, put your feet up and have a look below at Lewandowski’s five goals from the entire tie, and judge for yourself.
