A superb show of support for their injured supporter.
Liverpool will be displaying a Dunboyne GAA jersey in their dressing room at Anfield this weekend in support of Sean Cox. The Irishman is in critical condition following a heinous attack that occurred prior to Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Roma.
Merseyside Police have confirmed that two Italian men have been charged following the attack that Mr Cox seriously injured on Tuesday night.
20-year-old Filippo Lombardi was charged with violent disorder and wounding/inflicting grievous bodily harm, while 29-year-old Daniele Sciusco was charged with violent disorder.
Both men have been kept in custody to appear at South Sefton Magistrates Court this morning, Thursday 26 April.
Regarding Sean Cox, the 53-year-old Irishman remains in hospital and he’s in a critical condition at Walton Neurological Centre.
Despite this horrific ordeal, football supporters have rallied around Mr Cox with various acts of support and kindness. For example, a crowdfunding appeal to raise funds for Mr Cox’s medical bills has currently raised €26,000.
The fundraising page was organised by Emmet Kavanagh, an admin on the ‘Irish Liverpool Reds’ Facebook page, and in Emmet’s own words, he “decided to set up this page to help raise funds to cover Sean’s medical expenses and expenses incurred by his family to help them to stay by his side”.
“I have been in contact with a family member and they are aware that we are raising money,” Emmet said.
“Once the money is raised I plan on withdrawing it by cheque/bank draft and presenting it to either Sean and/or his family.”
This isn’t the only act of support that’s being shown because Liverpool FC will be displaying the Dunboyne GAA jersey in their own dressing room ahead of their match against Stoke this weekend.
As revealed on Off the Ball, Liverpool got in touch with Kevin Kilbane regarding the possibility of getting a Dunboyne GAA jersey to hang in the home dressing room at Anfield. The Reds want to display the Dunboyne jersey in their dressing room this weekend ahead of their match against Stoke City as a sign of support for Sean Cox.
Within an hour of Kilbane making the appeal on air, a man named Alan Clarke delivered a Dunboyne jersey to the former Irish international.
Tony Barrett, Liverpool’s Head of Club and Supporter Liaison, confirmed to JOE that the club had reached out.
A lovely touch.
