Brazilian goalkeeper checks his phone during league top flight match

His manager rightfully described the incident as "strange".

Sometimes you just can’t focus on one thing at a time

We’ve all been there. You’re at work or an important event and you know you’ve got either an extremely important message on the way, one which could be waited for but really, really shouldn’t. Time is of the essence. You only live once.

So you take your phone out, you check it and you get caught doing so. You blush, and you slide that phone right back into your pocket until the next moment of opportunity arises.

The aforementioned scenarios are situations in which you expect to see someone slyly sneak out their phone. A professional football match is really not one of those situations, especially when it involves one of the players.

But that is exactly what happened in a recent Brazilian Serie A match between Atletico Paranaense and Atletico Mineiro when Paranaense goalkeeper Santos decided to pull out his phone just seconds before kick off.

Disbelieving home fans at the Arena da Baixada were quick to use their own phones to highlight and share what their goalkeeper was doing, but thankfully were also nice enough to allow him to send a message without any noticeable interruption.

Quite what the goalkeeper was doing on the phone is unknown, but his manager, Fernando Diniz, was just as bemused as everyone else when speaking to media after the game.

“I don’t know,” he said after the game, which his side went on to lose 2-1. “I think it’s strange: Santos is a very responsible player. I thought it was strange, that’s what I can say.”

Couldn’t agree more Fernando.
