John Terry has left Aston Villa, the club has confirmed
Having arrived last summer from Chelsea, the defender was denied a Premier League return – and a 26th minute farewell substitution – in the Championship playoff defeat to Fulham at Wembley over the weekend.
Hot on the heels of a statement from owner Dr Tony Xia which made clear the club had to think about being sustainable, a further release from Villa confirmed Terry’s departure.
But let’s be honest. That’s not why you’re here, is it? Nope, not at all. You’re here to look at people making jokes at Mr Captain, Leader, Legend’s expense. Let’s just crack on, shall we?
Terry’s departure comes only days after reports did the rounds that he wanted a clause adding to any extended deal with Villa that would prevent him from playing against Chelsea if promotion was secured. Unsurprisingly, this inspired a good few tweets after his Villa exit had been announced…

You get the idea.
At this early stage, it’s unclear where Terry will be plying his trade next season. He followed up the announcement of his departure with a post on his Instagram account which thanked his Villa teammates, Steve Bruce and the coaching staff, Dr Xia and the club’s supporters.
