Manchester United’s new signing Fred faces a wait to see if he will be fit for Brazil’s World Cup campaign, following a training ground injury on Thursday
Brazil are currently based at Tottenham’s training base prior to flying out to Russia, and footage posted to Twitter by Luiz Felipe Castro showed Fred go to ground after a challenge from Real Madrid’s Casemiro. Castro’s previous tweet described how the 25-year-old had appeared to be in ‘a lot of pain’ following the incident.
Fred played no further part in the session and instantly received treatment.
Rodrigo Lasmar, the Brazilian team’s doctor, spoke to the media after the session and explained that the 25-year-old had suffered “trauma to the ankle” in the challenge. He also added that it was still too early to determine the extent of the injury.
“It all depends on the answer tomorrow,” Lasmar said. “If tomorrow he continues in pain and some signal makes us more alert, we may need an imaging examination…. Tomorrow we will have a clearer possibility.
“He has had an ankle trauma, but it is still too early for any evaluation, he has already begun the recovery work, he had that part in real pain.
“It’s early for any diagnosis, we need to wait for more. The first 24 hours are crucial, tomorrow we will see how he will feel, the response to treatment, whether he will train or not.”
It was announced on Tuesday that an agreement was in place between United and Shakhtar Donestsk for Fred, who played for his national side in their World Cup warm-up match with Croatia at Anfield last weekend.
He has completed his United medical, although the transfer is yet to be formally completed.

Brazil’s first World Cup game takes place on June 17 against Switzerland. They will also face group matches against Costa Rica and Serbia, before hopefully progressing to the knockout stages. Prior to their departure for Russia, they will also play a friendly with Austria in Vienna.
