Manchester City complete the signing of Claudio Gomes

Pep Guardiola’s not had all his own way in the transfer market this summer

Although Manchester City have finally been able to add Riyad Mahrez to their ranks, they missed out on signing Jorginho from Napoli – the Italian international opting to reunite with Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea instead.

With little over two weeks remaining until the transfer window closes for English clubs, City have now at least been able to complete another piece of business, signing Claudio Gomes from Paris Saint-Germain.

The highly rated youngster had to wait until Monday, when he turned 18, to formally complete the move to City. His contract with PSG expired at the end of June, meaning City have not had to fork out a fee.

Despite coming through the youth system with the French champions, Gomes never made an appearance for their first team. According to a report in the Daily Mail, Guardiola is expected to keep the defensive midfielder in Manchester for the next few months so that he can adapt to life at his new club. He may consider allowing him to move out on loan in January.

He’s already joined up with his new teammates as they prepare for the new season in New York.

City lost a preseason friendly to Dortmund by a single goal in Chicago’s Soldier Field last week. They will now face Liverpool in New York’s MetLife Stadium in the small hours of Thursday morning before taking Guardiola’s former side Bayern Munich in Miami on Sunday.

They take on Chelsea in the Community Shield at Wembley on August 5, beginning the defence of their Premier League crown away at Arsenal a week later.
