Jose Mourinho confirms David De Gea will sign new contract “as soon as possible”

If there’s one player Manchester United fans don’t want to lose, it’s David De Gea

Yes, Paul Pogba pulls the strings for Jose Mourinho’s side and Romelu Lukaku scores very often for fun, but it’s David De Gea who is undoubtedly the club’s most important player.

De Gea kept 18 clean sheets in the Premier League last season, as he was once again named the club’s player of the year and the former Atletico Madrid man is widely recognised as the best goalkeeper in the world.

Since moving from La Liga to Old Trafford at the age of 20, De Gea has improved year-on-year and has made the number one shirt his own at both club and international level.

He had been strongly linked with a to Atletico’s bitter rivals Real Madrid for a number of years, and but for the grace of a broken fax machine could well be a Madrid player now.

But the Spanish giants’ acquisition of former Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois effectively rules out any future move for De Gea, something confirmed by manager Jose Mourinho this week.

“He is a Manchester United player and will as soon as possible sign a new contract. Would I swap De Gea for any other keeper in the world? No,” Mourinho told press.

“He likes it here, we love him. We want him to stay, so when a player is not on the market his value is zero.”

According to reports, the new contract will be worth £200,000, meaning that it likely an extension rather than a pay rise.
