Jurgen Klopp admits to surprise at the intrusions of the press ahead of first game

Don't be asking him for a photograph, either.

Barely a week has passed since Jurgen Klopp was announced as Liverpool manager, yet the German seemed mildly irritated at the media spotlight he has been placed under.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of this weekend’s fixture at Tottenham, Klopp seemed far from impressed that virtually his every move has found its way into the press since he arrived on Merseyside.

“I don’t like being photographed all the time, who does?” he added.

Klopp also explained that despite the attention, he wasn’t putting any pressure on himself as he chooses not to read what is written about him.

“I don’t read what you write. I’m completely free of expectations. My pressure that I place on myself is enough.”

Later, the former Borussia Dortmund manager was asked what he thought of his look-alike, which has been seen on the streets of Liverpool this week.

“In Germany, many people look like me. I’m not the best shaver in the world, funny hair, glasses, and you look like me.”

Following this, Klopp was then shown a Liverpool shirt with the word ‘Normal’ above a number 1, printed on the back and asked to elaborate on the attention he has received since his arrival.

“Yesterday I was having dinner with Zeljko, Pete and our wives and they [fans] wanted a photo. But I had to say no, because every photo they take is on Twitter and it looks like every day I am in restaurants and bars!”

Perhaps referring to the story from last weekend where Klopp was pictured having a Friday night beer in the city, he seemed eager to focus on what his job is.

“I felt that people think it’s not too bad that I’m here. It’s a little bit strange at this moment because we haven’t played yet. Let’s start playing football, then see what they think of me!”

It’s safe to say he might regret calling himself “the normal one”.
