Three people have died in a shooting in Jacksonville, Florida
Three people have died and nine more injured at a mass shooting at gaming tournament, American police have confirmed.
The incident took place at the Chicago Pizza at The Jacksonville Landing, in Downtown Jacksonville, during a Madden eSports tournament, the sheriff’s office confirmed.
A heavy police presence was on the scene, as are ambulances and firefighters.
SWAT conducted a “methodical search” of the building and asked members of the public to stay where they were and not run through the area, as well as warning others to stay away from the area.
One suspect is dead at the scene, 24-year-old David Katz, described as a gamer taking part in the tournament by authorities.
Gunshots were heard as gamers live streamed a Madden NFL tournament on Twitch. A clip of the moment the shooting started has been circulated on social media.
19-year-old Drini Gjoka was taking part in the tournament. He tweeted: “The tourney just got shot up. I’m leaving and never coming back.
“I am literally so lucky. The bullet hit my thumb.”
The makers of Madden, EA Sports said they were aware of the incident, releasing the following statement: “This is a horrible situation, and our deepest sympathies go out to all involved.”
The tournament was taking place at the GLHF Game Bar of a Chicago Pizza. GLHF have confirmed that all of their staff are safe.
In a statement, the Jacksonville Landing said: “We are deeply saddened at the incident and pray for everyone involved.
“The Jacksonville Landing is fully cooperating with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and all ongoing investigations.”
