He faces six weeks on the sidelines
Jack Wilshere is facing six weeks out after undergoing ankle surgery yet again. The midfielder’s career has been plagued by recurring injuries and just when he was enjoying a run of continuous starts for West Ham, his body has let him down again.
Wilshere sustained the injury in training last week, and West Ham were hopeful that it would not require surgery. But their optimism was in vain, as the injury was revealed to be serious enough to require an operation.
Wilshere missed out on West Ham’s first victory of the season at the weekend, as the Hammers beat Everton 3-1 at Goodison Park, thanks to goals from Andriy Yarmolenko and Marko Arnautović.
The midfielder’s injury is a heavy blow for manager Manuel Pellegrini, who pushed for Wilshere to be given a three-year contract in the summer, as opposed to the one-year contract the board wanted to give him, according to The Guardian.
Pellegrini is a big fan of Wilshere, and was not concerned by his fitness record when the player joined the club on a free transfer. But if niggling injuries continue to halt the player’s progress, which appears so, Pellegrini will have to find alternative ways to set up his midfield.
A combination of Declan Rice, Mark Noble and Pedro Obiang worked at the weekend, providing enough defensive solidity to allow the front line to express themselves.
