Klopp is a man of class
Jürgen Klopp’s bond with Liverpool, both the football club and the city’s people, is both strong. Ever since he arrived at Anfield in the autumn of 2015, he’s had a connection with the club’s supporters that goes beyond results on the pitch.
This was evident in August, when Klopp went out of his way to meet Sean Cox, the Irish Liverpool fan who was attacked by a group of Roma fans before Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final back in May. Liverpool were playing a pre-season friendly in Dublin, so Klopp took the opportunity to meet the injured fan and his family, a gesture that will have no doubt lifted their spirits.
And as Cox continues to recover from the horrific attack that left him with brain injuries, Klopp has once again done his part to help, donating £4,000 to the fan’s GoFundMe page.

The fundraising page was set up to help with the Irish Reds fan’s rehabilitation. He is currently undergoing a programme that requires ongoing and long-term intensive care and support.
The page is aiming to raise £1,700,000 and is currently on £50,000, but donations keep flooding in, and substantial sums such as Klopp’s donation will only help the cause both financially and in terms of raising awareness.
Jay McKenna, who is the chair of the Spirit of Shankly, revealed the donation on Friday afternoon on Twitter, as he urged supporters to spare what they could to aid Sean and his family.
“As you are aware, our colleague and friend Sean Cox sustained serious and life altering injuries earlier this year while attending a football game in Liverpool.” reads the GoFundMe page.
“The level of solidarity from so many from our community and beyond for Sean, Martina, Jack, Shauna and Emma since this tragic incident has been overwhelming and is deeply appreciated by Sean’s family.
“Over the past number of months Sean has been taking small but important steps on a road to recovery. His journey will be a long and difficult one and the focus will continue on ensuring the best possible care to maximise the potential in Sean’s recovery.”
Everton’s Seamus Coleman has also donated €5,000 to the cause, putting rivalry aside to support the Cox family in their time of need.
