It’s fair to say the Bryan Singer-directed film is pretty popular amongst UK audiences
Released last week, Bohemian Rhapsody is on course to becoming the highest grossing music biopic ever released in the UK.
Grossing an impressive £6.48 million in its opening weekend in the UK, the Queen biopic knocked the Lady Gaga-starring A Star Is Born off the top of the UK box office.
To date the top grossing music biopics in the UK include Johnny Cash’s Walk the Line, which secured £10.4 million at the box office, while the most successful film is Eminem’s 8 Mile, which topped out at £13.3 million.
Despite being knocked from the top spot after a fortnight, A Star Is Born still secured over £2 million this past weekend, meaning that it has grossed £19.2 million after less than 30 days in movie theatres.
Bohemian Rhapsody is the fourth musical film to top the UK box office this year – the others are The Greatest Showman, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and A Star Is Born.
Rami Malek, who plays Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, spoke to us about his transformation into the flamboyant singer and the hardest part about it.
“It takes a lot of confidence and courage to even attempt to put yourself in Freddie’s shoes and then dance around in them,” he began.
“I was singing the songs all the time, even though it’s mostly him in there now. I gave it my best shot everyday. I would often lose my voice because I’m not a singer. I took singing classes as often as I could but before that I just tried to immerse myself in everything I could.
“I enjoyed every second of it but singing is what I thought would compromise my confidence in portraying someone who ruled a stage and an arena. And so I just had to pretend, as the phrase goes, ‘to sing and dance like no one’s watching’, everyday.”
