Transfer season is lurking
Even during the season, transfer stories refuse to disappear, as clubs re-evaluate their squads’ strengths and weaknesses and plan their business for January.
Chelsea look set to dive into the market for a striker after failing to do so in the summer, having to rotate between Álvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud this season.
Giroud has shown excellent hold-up play and Morata has improved in front of goal in recent weeks, netting a brace against Crystal Palace, but Maurizio Sarri is still after another forward.
According to The Mirror, they are keeping tabs on Callum Wilson after his prolific start to the season with Bournemouth. Wilson has scored six goals in the Premier League so far this season, with four assists to boot.
Wilson boasts better form than any other English striker this season, leading to shouts for him to be included in Gareth Southgate’s upcoming England squad. But with Wayne Rooney’s controversial return for one game only, Wilson may have to wait a little longer before he gets his first cap.
Wilson signed a new contract with Bournemouth in July after recovering from two separate knee ligament injuries during his time with the Cherries, so Chelsea would not be able to sign him on the cheap. That is unlikely to stop them from trying, though.
Wilson opened the scoring for Bournemouth in their 2-1 defeat to Manchester United on Saturday, taking his tally up to 50 goals for the club, a target he admitted he should have reached earlier.
“It’s nice to make that achievement. I should have had it a lot sooner,” he said.
“Now I am looking upwards, I am trying to get 100 goals. Why not make another landmark for the club?
“Any striker wants to score as many goals as possible for their club and I’m the same.
“Day by day, I am trying to become the finished article. I don’t think you can ever stop improving.”
