Know anyone who this might affect?
Netflix have changed the way we consume movies and TV for good since its rise to popularity.
It’s gotten to the point where if someone asks you what you did over the weekend, you don’t even have to tell them what it was exactly you watched on TV, the word “Netflix” will suffice.
And as brilliant as it is, some people still don’t fork out the monthly fee for the streaming service. Instead, they mooch off of their friends and family.
Well, that might not be an option for much longer.
New technology unveiled at CES 2019 in Las Vegas could put a stop to this.
Software company Synamedia have developed a system that keeps track of your activity on services like Netflix, which analyses things like when and where you log on. That information can then be used to identify accounts that are being used by multiple users.
And, in theory, they could then shut down your account.
According to Digital Spy, Jean Marc Racine, CPO of Synamedia says that they may have to start clamping down on shared passwords.
“Casual credentials sharing is becoming too expensive to ignore.
“Our new solution gives operators the ability to take action. Many casual users will be happy to pay an additional fee for a premium, shared service with a greater number of concurrent users.
“It’s a great way to keep honest people honest while benefiting from an incremental revenue stream.”
So for anyone still using someone else’s Netflix account, your days might be numbered. And please, for the love of God, stop using your ex’s. There’s just no need for that sort of behaviour…
