PSG fear Marco Verratti could miss Man United Champions League tie with ankle injury

PSG’s loss could well be Manchester United’s gain

Paris Saint-Germain have confirmed that their Italian midfielder Marco Verratti suffered an ankle sprain during their 9-0 victory over Guingamp at the weekend.

Thomas Tuchel’s side travel to Old Trafford on February 12 for their UEFA Champions League second round first leg against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s in-form side, and Verratti could be absent should his ankle injury prove serious enough.

Speaking after the game, Tuchel admitted that he feared Verratti could be out for a long period of time.

“I think that it is serious. Really, it is the worst thing that could have happened to us,” he said.

In a brief statement released by Paris Saint-Germain, the club confirmed that Verratti would undergo further tests to determine the seriousness of the injury:

“The MRI performed at Marco Verratti last night, after the match against Guingamp, confirmed a sprained left ankle without any other injury associated.

The evolution in the next days after the care and new exams at the beginning of the week will make it possible to specify the time of unavailability of the player.”

PSG are currently 13 points clear at the top of Ligue 1 and look unlikely to be caught. This means – as was the case with previous manager Unai Emery – that Tuchel will be under extreme pressure to progress in and win the Champions League.

Should Verratti’s injury be as serious as feared, the club may enter the transfer market for a new midfielder, with Adrian Rabiot – who hasn’t played for the club since December – currently out of favour.
