Jose Mourinho’s contract termination cost Manchester United a lot of money

Manchester United’s half-yearly results have revealed that the club paid £19.6 million for the loss of former manager Jose Mourinho and his backroom staff.

The Portuguese was sacked in December after two and a half years at Old Trafford following a string of bad results.

His replacement Ole Gunnar Solskjær immediately improved things at the club going on a run of ten wins in ten games before his team capitulated to PSG in the Champions League on Tuesday.

The loss to the club was reported as an ‘exceptional item’. A statement in their half-yearly results reads: “Exceptional items for the quarter were £19.6million, relating to compensation to the former manager and certain members of the coaching staff for loss of office.

“Exceptional items for the prior year quarter were £nil.”

The 56-year-old manager announced he would be fronting a new fortnightly football show on RT for the remainder of the season.

‘On the touchline with Jose Mourinho’ will see the former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Inter Milan manager discuss the upcoming knockout stages of the Champions League as well as other talking points from the world of football as they unfold.

“After the previous stage of my career was over, everyone wondered what I was going to do next. They talked about different clubs. On the one hand, it’s logical to stay on your home field where everything is familiar. On the other, I wanted a new challenge and a fresh perspective,” Mourinho said following the announcement.

“I am used to surprising people and I thought ‘why not give it a go?’ I’m going to talk about football on RT. What else did you think I was going to do?”
